The Mubare group was the first gorilla family to be habituated for tourism in Uganda, marking the beginning of gorilla tourism in Bwindi.

Ruhondeza, the dominant silverback, led the group for many years and was a major tourist attraction until his death in 2012. His grave is marked near the park and can be visited by tourists.

When Ruhondeza died in 2012, the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) gave him a burial with honor — a rare gesture for a wild animal, reflecting his importance to Ugandan conservation and tourism history.
The group is now composed of 1 Silverback
(Maraya) being the leader, 3 Adult Females, 1 Sub Adult Female, 2 Juvenile Males & 1 Infant Male.
