The Mishaya group was established in July 2010 when a silverback named Mishaya split from the larger Nshongi family, which was then the largest habituated gorilla group in Bwindi. Mishaya was known for his aggressive nature, often engaging in fights with other gorilla groups to acquire females and expand his family. He led the group until his death in 2014 due to an intestinal obstruction. Following his death, the group experienced some dispersal but was later restructured under the leadership of a new silverback, Tinfayo, who took over in 2018.

The group is now composed of 1 Silverback, 4 Adult Females, 1 Sub Adult Male & 3 Infant Males.
